One of Russia’s best kept secrets, Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea is a great placefor all those looking for something different. Six isles and islets form an archipelago that separates the White Sea from the Onega Bay. The largest Bolshoi Solovetsky Island is home to an astonishing 15th-century monastery, the witness of a very turbulent history.

There are two ways to get there. From Saint Peterburg there is a night train to Kem. Around 800 km, 14 hours. From Kem, you can take a local bus or a cheap taxi to the even smaller town of Rabocheostrovsk from where boats leave to Bolshoi Solovetsky Island. And two hours by steamer. it was fun!
Another way is to fly from Arkhangelsk. I have heard that there are flights twice a week, but I am not sure. One evening (around 9 p.m.) I went for a walk to see the airport. It is probably the smallest airport I have ever seen.
was it worth taking such a complicated journey just to see the monastery? For me, it was a great experience and I preferred it than going to the famous place with the herds of tourists, like Venice, Prague, Florence or Barcelona. Very fresh air, literally and figuratively.
