Photographer's Note

For me, this is what I would consider my prototypical Philippines photo. Fils are perhaps the most eager subjects you will ever come across. In some places, it is normal for kids to see a camera and sort of ham it up, or ask for you to take a shot. However, in the Phils, this extends to people of all ages. Just walking around with a camera in your hand is enough for people to call themselves to your attention. A typical call is to shout out, "One Shot!" That is what happened here.

I was just walking around on morning in Malate, having already taken a number of shots when asked. This guy was no different, he called to me and I complied. What was different though, is that he didn't really ham it up for the camera, he was able to give me a fairly relaxed, comfortable expression.

A happy, friendly guy sitting around, not only willing, but wanting to have his photo taken. For me, this totally sums up the Phils. I love that place.

80mm focal length, ISO 200, handheld, uncropped, typical post production.
