Photographer's Note

This is a closer view of the pagoda's west side and its covered stairway. It was during the 20th century that the Shwemawdaw experienced three, serious earthquakes. The last of these, in 1930 CE, almost totally destroyed it. Following on WWII, volunteers (unpaid) rebuilt it, and with generous donations, its height was increased. In 1954, it received a new diamond-studded hti. Some maintenance work (left) is always ongoing.
