Photographer's Note

My last photo from Kashmir, India, in 1977 inspired me to travel with my time machine exactly one year further back, to October 1976, moving east to Sarawak state on Borneo, in eastern Malaysia.

This is from Sibu, the third largest city of Sarawak, about 400 km northeast of the state capital Kuching when going by road. The crows would fly a much shorter distance, but they don't have to make a long detour around a bay of the sea and the wide mouth of a river. Going by bus that way I actually had to spend the night in a small town. I am sure you can make it much faster today. The roads were not perfect in 1976.

There's not really much to say about this photo as such, except that it was scanned from a Kodachrome slide and that houseboats like these can probably no longer be found anywhere along the sea promenade of modern Sibu.

I don't have an idea where I took this photo, but my instincts tell me it was somewhere close to the place indicated by the map coordinates 2.28627 111.82859. Of course it looks totally different now. Just click at Map: view.

Here is a larger version.

In the WS you can see more houseboats in a part of Sibu that probably doesn't exist at all today.

Sibu lies near the mouth of a long river called Rajang, which starts in the interior of Borneo. I will stay on the Rajang for my next uploads too. I have actually been there a few times before, but now I have rediscovered several photos I earlier neglected.
