Photographer's Note

Not long after I started digital photography, this shot taken in my hometown Sibu showed a pond with interesting colors of the water. The area used to be hilly forest but the earth was cut and taken away for land filling and leaving behind the pit here which was filled up with rainwater to become a pond. Most of Sibu land is flat and low lying, except here in the north-east zone where hilly terrains are seen. Quite unusual to find the color of water changed to blue/green and crystal clear, most likely due to the acidic nature of the ground. No fish was found in the pond.

Sibu used to be active in rubber and pepper production but later timber extraction became the main economic activity until recently when the forests ran out. The town was properous due to timber logging and was 2nd largest in Sarawak for a long time until recent years when mass exodus of migrants to other urban areas of Sarawak saw the town dwindle to rank number 4 now, with a population of 200,000.
