Abstract art - paint of boat? This was a lazy afternoon at the village near northern bank Sarawak River.

By paying RM0.30, you can ride on a wooden sampan from Kuching to the northern side of Sarawak River and check out the many villages. On a lazy afternoon, the boats were just lying around. The sky was heavily overcast and the reflection on the water seemed to be very good for the boats in abstract view. You can see the cooler and fuel tank on one of the boats, it was used for fishing. Some villagers catch fish from the river for their daily consumption.

In Sarawak, one local ethnic group of people traditionally settle and build their homes near riverbanks and coastal regions where waterway provides a mode of fishing and transport. Most of the houses are wooden and on stilts. When the river tide rises, the compound is floode and it cleanses the compound as it retreats. New settlement areas may not be on stilts as they can afford with better sanitary system.

In this area, the villages are quite self contained with schools, mosques and many sundry stores operating out of the homes.
