Photographer's Note

Well, I can't say this is how the normal Laotian day looks like, but it gives a different picture of this relatively poor country. I liked the country very much and I have to say it's my favourite in that part of the world. People I met were incredibly friendly and open and the country can offer authentic experiences different from the other countries around.

Laos is especially underdeveloped when it comes to the infrastructure. The Mekong River serves as a fantastic source for the country and is the heart of Laos in every way. It is essential for the economy and as for the transportation, a speedboat on Mekong is usually much faster than a car.

On my first full day in Laos I went to see the Kuangsi Waterfalls about 25 km, one hour, outside Luang Prabang, the second largest city. Our driver became more and more competitive as other cars approached behind us, and eventually they managed to pass. Our driver didn't like that. Safely arriving, we were ready to explore the many natural pools and the main waterfall that makes up the area, together with a bear park.

This is exactly as exotic as it sounds to European ears. I did enjoy it, and even though there are a lot of tourists, there is plenty of space. I can also recommend buying a t-shirt there to support protection of bears.
