Photographer's Note

This was a quick snap shot in order to avoid being too obvious somewhere in Makassar in early morning. What a better way to enjoy the street view and watched the world go by, but this striking rundown becak - a three wheeler trishaw caught my attention. There are hundreds of them out there operating on short runs competing one another all over the town providing cheapest mode of transport to the masses and costs only fractions of a dollar. It's in Indonesia I think, that is the true heartland of the becak of various designs & styles, and symbol of the country as the smell of a clove cigarette or the aroma of Java coffee.

This hard working becak man was on a short break in between fare! so cooly shaded away from the scorching heat outside on what looked like another exhausting day, and he is lucky if he makes anywhere close to about five dollars per day. Unsure whether to upload this image for a couple of reasons; firstly it feels like I took advantage of the situation but then again the plight is so out there. Also does he deserve to be used as 'model' so that I can maybe improve my photography. However I did not hesitate take this shot because it provoked an immediate and a very emotional response from me.

If it does the same for others and even gets us to think slightly different about people in their situation then I will feel as if I have achieved something. This is to me, what street photography is all about.....
