a rather unexpected encounter in Semarang

---

Semarang is a major city on the northen coast of Java. There are no major tourist sites, but we really appreciated the vibe in the old town center.

---

Lawang Sebu (the house of a thousand doors) is an enormous building which used to house the administrative offices of the Dutch colonial railways. During WW2 the building was employed by the Japanese. It has been restored and you can visit it.

Some people believe Lawang Sebu is a haunted place. Visitors have reported having seen the ghost of a Dutch woman who committed suicide, others claim they have encountered ghosts of decapitated prisoners of war.

Lawang Sebu was also the setting for Lawang Sewu: Dendam Kuntilanak (Lawang Sewu: Kuntilanak's Vengeance), a 2007 Indonesian horror flick directed by Arie Azis. A Kuntilanak or Pontianak is a type of ghost in Indonesian (and Malay) folklore.

In this movie, a group of Jakarta students upset the ghosts and kuntilaks of Lawang Sebu, which leads to killings, mutilations and gore.

This picture shows the bottom part of the stained glass windows in the central staircase of building A.
In these stained glass windows the Dutch colonials liked to evoke a romantic image of their home country.
