Photographer's Note

Ancient misty temples across from my hotel window in Chamba. The oldest temple is from the 3rd century. Here is where I attended a special puja on the first day of Shivarati, a festival for Shiva, god of dancing, destruction, and fertility. He is the main God of much of India, and all of Nepal. Unfortunetaly, I had to clone out endless telephone and electrical wires on the street seperating me and the temples. I am on the third floor, a huge 3 story wall runs along the street, with the temple on top.(I hate cloning). I saw pictures in the musuem of Chamba 100 years ago, it was beautiful, spacious and looked well kept. I came for a thousand year old procession to be held at the end of the festival, on aug. 31, 2004. I was attacked, my camera broken, on July 31, 2004, (I was seen being attacked on cable tv) by the Chamba police. I was not important enough according to the Chamba police, to photograph the dancing at the festival, even with an offical permission VIP card. The mountains are beautiful, the local people so nice, the police completly out of control. Travel there is too risky!
