Mumbai - Living and working in Dharavi

Hereby a set of five pictures (my last) showing the human side of Mumbai in the Dharavi slum.
I had no idea which one to choose as main photo. If interested in life in India, I hope you will look at all five.

Important to know: despite Dharavi is a slum, it is not without economic activity.

Pottery and textile are the industries which have existed in Dharavi for quite some time.

I went into one textile factory but it was rest time for the workers; the lights were out and little daylight came in. In the semi-darkness I could see a number of people sleeping. We had to be quiet. I made a picture but this one is nothing.
The room reminded me of a sweatshop as seen on TV. Clearly the working conditions would be unacceptable in western countries.

The pottery is carried out in an extended area. No problem to see the potters at work.
There are also many streets where you can see the pots drying.
It’s an important industry in Dharavi. But it should be noted. People who live in houses near the kilns suffer from health problems.

Dharavi is also a place where plastic and metals coming from all over India are recycled.
First the plastic bottles and flasks are sorted manually as you can see on one of the pictures in the WS.
Then they’re all cleaned, ground to chips or processed into granules.
Afterwards everything can be melted and transformed in order to make new products. I didn’t see this last process happen in Dharavi. Possibly it does.
However, while recycling has become an important industry, it is also a source of heavy pollution in the district.

I still have a lot of other pictures of Mumbai. Yet I like to move on.
Next time photos of the second place I visited during my recent trip.
A much smaller place on the countryside. Something completely different.
