Photographer's Note

After a week in Goa in April 1973 I needed to go to Bombay, where I would commence my long journey home after spending many months in Asia. In those days there was no railway along this part of the Indian west coast and no comfortable long distance buses. In case there was a small airport in Goa there were very few flights, so the only option was to go by boat, a journey of approximately 20 hours.

I bought the cheapest ticket which meant that I slept on the deck, using my sleeping-bag as a mattress. A couple of times we picked up passengers from small ports which could only take very small boats. We anchored a short distance from the shore and the passengers were rowed to our boat where I suppose they had to climb a small ladder to reach the lower deck. I watched from the upper deck, but i don't remember exactly how they got on board.

Because of some misunderstandings please note that the small boat seen in these photos IS NOT THE BOAT THAT WENT TO BOMBAY.

An alternative photo can be seen in the workshop. Both photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
