Tamil Nadu - Madurai - The outer gopurams

On my main picture you see the West Tower. I note that I have taken more pictures of it than of the other four large gopurams that surround the temple complex.
You cannot conclude from this that the west gopuram is the most beautiful. The reasons for my many pictures are rather the light and the position of the sun at the moments that I was near one of the towers.

The tallest gopuram is the South Tower that rises to 52 m. It’s is a nine-storey gopuram and was built by Siramalai Sevvanthimurti Chetti, a wealthy Hindu who lived near Thiruchirapalli.
It was completed in the second half of the 16th century.

This gopuram is notable for its extensive artwork with over 1.500 mythological characters in panels that narrate legends from the Hindu texts, particularly the Puranas (= a vast genre of Indian literature about a wide range of topics, particularly myths, legends and other traditional lore; composed primarily in Sanskrit, but also in Tamil and other Indian languages).
