Photographer's Note

Khichdi (lentils, rice and different vegetables) being cooked and served at the Khichdi Baba Temple near the Dasashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi which is believed to have been operating as an `anna kshetra' (a place of food) for centuries.

Said to have been started by Shankar Swami Khichdi Baba centuries ago, the ‘Bhandara’ as these places are called, is being run by Sanjay Maharaj, the fourth generation descendant of the family which has been managing the temple for over 100 years. According to Sanjay, the Bhandara operates daily from 7 am and almost 600-800 people are served every day.

I couldn’t compose the picture very well and in my haste to capture as soon as the beedi smoker had turned his face, missed a portion of the man on the right.
