I took this shot in Bongaon( a town near Kolkata).
Blue Throated Barbet:-
The Blue-throated Barbet (Megalaima asiatica) is an Asian barbet, seen across the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a world-wide tropical distribution. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills; this species eats fruits and insects.
This bird is so colorful that its hard to miss it when among the woods, but once inside dense foliage, no matter how hard you try, you wont be able to spot it. Perhaps Blue-throated Barbet’s colorful head will be of help in this situation, with primary colors blue green and red present. This bird loves Common Fig and Peepal tree (the tree under which Lord Buddha got enlightenment), well maybe all Ficus species for their delicious fruits and deciduous nature. They are generally spotted early morning having community breakfasts with other birds like Koels, Bulbuls, Magpie Robins and other Barbet species found here.
