Photographer's Note

Chong'an is a small market town about two hours north of Kaili. It lies on the banks of the Chong'an river and in the surrounding area paths lead up the hillside to several Miao villages.

The Miao people, or Hmong as they prefer to be called, make up one of South-East Asia's bigger ethnic minorities. They (used to) have a reputation as independent-minded and rebellious highlanders. Hmong women are known for their embroidery and silver jewellery.

This picture was taken at Chong'an market, where you can buy many things, including a new haircut. In fact I had my hair trimmed by this guy too.
