Photographer's Note

About an hour away from Lhasa on my trip to Yamdrok Lake, I passed this Water Burial Site located on the southern bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo River close to the Yarlung Tsangpo River Bridge.

In this area of Tibet, two types of burial prevail: celestial burial and water burial. Water burial is a derivative of celestial burial and is for poorer people ie those with no kin or beggars. People simply carry the body to the water, dismember it, pack it and throw it in the water. However, in southern Tibet where there are no vultures for sky burials, water burials are widely adopted by commoners, and are not associated with a low social status.
