Photographer's Note

1779 AD, Emin Mosque & Minaret, and a moment of calmness on the edge of Taklamakan Desert just outside the former Silk Road town of Turpan. Located in a depression that sinks down to 154 metres below sea level, Turpan - which means 'Rich and Fertile Land' in Turkic literally, is the second lowest area of land on the planet, also one of the hottest with summer temperatures of around 47oC, climbing to as high as 82oC on the surface of the sand.

Turpan is also an agricultural oasis reputed as the 'Hometown of Grapes and Melons' which owe much to the efficient underground Karez system of irrigation stretching some 3000 km, and considered to be as one of the greatest ancient projects in Central Asia, long before Mao and Co robbed this Uyghur homeland......
