Taxkorgan Tadjik Autonomous County is located on the "roof of the world" in the eastern part of Pamir Plateau, north of Karakoram Range and west of Tarim Basin at an average altitude of 4000 metres where the Kunlun, KaraKunlun, Hindukush and Tian Shan mountains come together. Taxkorgan borders Tajikistan to the west, Pakistan and Afghanistan to the southwest and close to the border of Kyrgyzstan.

The county seat is the town of Taxkorgan, lies about 300km southeast of Kashgar, an important staging post and all travellers passing through The Karakoram Highway enroute to Pakistan stay the night here. The native population is mainly Tadjik being the majority along with ethnics Kyrgyz and also groups of Han Chinese. A tiny and peaceful town comporising a couple of tree-lined streets, its a market town for sheep, wool and woollen goods and particularly carpets. The town boasts a long history as well as fantastic mountain scenery.
