Photographer's Note

Two brothers of Pouthisat, Cambodia, pass the time in the humble shack which is their home. I particularly like the haunting expression of the little guy on the left.

His sad expression reminds me that, in virtually every family I visited in this town (maybe ten or twelve homes) a child had been lost to disease--mainly from malaria and typhoid.

Dodgy health practices, including the use of water from questionable sources, exacerbate the mortality rate among children in Cambodia's rural regions.

It only costs about $50US to sink a well to obtain clean water. For many families it's too much in a land where even civil servants make about $25US a month.
