Photographer's Note

The rock desert is just one of four deserts to explore in southern Tunisia. The terrain is rutted by "wadis" -- eroded dry riverbeds looking very much as if a giant race of termites had dug up the earth. You'd never guess that sudden floods could violently sweep through these channels without warning during a heavy thunderstorm. The area is inhabited by Berbers, North Africa’s indigenous people. Many Berbers sstill live in stone and cave villages dug into the steep cliffs, clinging precariously to the sides of the hills or perched dramatically on hilltops. This is the ancient village of Mides which sits at the head of a deep gorge. Mides served as one of the settings in the movie, "The English Patient". In the movie, the lead character flies a plane through this gorge -- a thrilling scene. These cave and stone Berber villages are fascinating to explore. The sandstone dwellings blend into the landscape to create stunning compositions for my camera.
