Photographer's Note

The Red Colobus is only found on the island of Zanzibar, predominantly in the Jozani forest in the Jozani-Chwaka Bay conservation area. They are an endangered species, mainly due to habitat destruction, and are one of the worlds most endangered primates.

Their name, Red Colobus, is due to the red colour on their back and back of the head. They live in groups of about 30 animals, and are most active during the cooler parts of the day.

Young leaves and leaf buds make up around 50% of their diet, and they also eat unripe fruits, they cannot eat ripe fruits as they are unable to digest sugars.
