Photographer's Note

I return to Africa in the early 1980's with this photo. It is from Omdurman in Sudan, part of greater Khartoum, situated to the northwest of the confluence of the Blue and the White Nile. Khartoum, the capital, is further south, between the two arms of the Nile, while Khartoum North, the third major urban centre, is to the northeast.

I remember perfectly well making an excursion to Omdurman, the most traditional of these three cities, but I have no memory at all of taking this particular photo. I scanned it from a Kodachrome slide several years ago, and now I have just cleaned it a bit. It was quite noisy. The main reason I didn't show it before was probably the man stepping in front of the camera at the very moment I pressed the button. Cropping him out would not have worked well, so now I decided to keep him as a natural part of the street-scene.

Having a hard time finding a suitable title I decided to focus on the poor salesman, or maybe woman, seeing his (or her) tomatoes rolling away on the dirty ground. He (or she) of course wanted the tomatoes to be properly stacked on the dirty ground.

Here is a larger version. Another photo, totally unrelated but also from Omdurman, can be seen in a workshop.
