Photographer's Note

It's been 40 years today since the youth uprising in Soweto, South Africa. A tragic day for many, and still today a day of remembrance. Huge groups of students (up to 20,000) took to the streets to protest against the apartheid regime, primarily for having to learn Afrikaans as the first language at school. Police took police violence to a new level and hundreds of students were killed. Yet the government still hasn't got the balls to apologize - 40 years later! However, it has been made a public holiday and is today known as Youth Day in South Africa. Here's the South African flag, dedicated to the victims of June 16, 1976.

The picture was taken at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town.
