Photographer's Note
I met these friendly girls in Berbera, the largest seaside city in the former Somalia and also a significant port in the Horn of Africa.
Despite years of war in Somalia that left the country in complete disarray, compounded by the recent US and Ethiopian intervention, Somaliland largely escaped unscathed. The republic declared independence in 1991, forming a stable and a far more economically developed state than Somalia had ever achieved. Yet, despite Somalilanders' strong identification with their fledgling state, and Somaliland's huge economic potential, the "international community" refuses to recognise its existence, adamantly upholding the sovereignty of a now-defunct Somalia. Due to lack of international recognition, Somaliland has been unable to obtain foreign aid needed for its infrastructural development. Yet the Somalilanders' optimism for statehood lives on.

Hello, Andy
Good colours despite the inconvinient light, but I think the BG in the left is slightly overexposed. Good depth of field though. Interesting note, complying with the copmo.

Hi Andy,
It is so nice to have such a positive image from Somalia! THANK YOU. I have many Somali friends who are incredible and resilient people and you have captured this in this photo. I suppose technically it could be a little sharper perhaps, but I don't care at all because it's such an appealing image to me and so nicely presented otherwise. Thanks again!

Hello Andy,
A very nice triple portrait from a part of the world we see very little from. The refusal to recognize the possibly most stable and democratic country on the Horn of Africa is typical of the hypocrisy of top diplomacy. I am glad you managed to go to Somaliland and hope you will show us more pictures from that unknown country.
Best wishes,
Gert
