Photographer's Note

This girl is holding a "baton de manioc" (stick of manioc), one of the staple foods of Gabon. It is made from the tubers of the cassava (manioc) plant. After the tubers are harvested, they are soaked in water, then boiled, mashed, wrapped in leaves, and then steamed. The girl is holding one still wrapped in its leaf wrapper, ready to be served with a spicy stew or sauce.
