Photographer's Note
This photo was taken going down from the Dorze highlands into the city of Arba Minch in Ethiopia. Below you can see lakes Abaya and lake Chamo.
HOwever while the landscape is really breathtaking, these poor women are unable to enjoy it as they are too busy doing their daily chores of colecting firewood or water.
This is a common sight throughout the third world. One thing that comes to mind is why is it that men do not do such tasks, everywhere you go it seems to be women the ones doing this sort of thing.
I saw in a magazine something about an inteligent design contest for the poor and the winner was a wheel formed container to carry water which would allow people to roll the water rather than carry it.
Just having a solar cell allowing families to cook, would both save forests as well as free up a lot of time thus improving living standards for the poorest.

Excellent photo that depicts both the landscape and tough lives of these women, burdened by the heavy loads in this case. Your poignant note is also well-written and to-the-point. Ideas abound, noone seems to take the initiative while the governments are too busy waging wars. Great photojournalism again! Regards,

The shot here is amazing,in a side I see a very beautiful landscape and attractive and special view you show us but in other side in a great combination,I see it very sad,the people who works and spend their life very hard.

Not long ago Ricardo showed a similiar scene and I explained him why it goes in that way ;). Interesting capture with these two-legs trucks on the road. I must call my wife, let she knows ;).
