Photographer's Note

Lucas (lucasgalodoido) told me that the Portuguese word crioulo (creole) has a very pejorative, derogatory meaning in Brazil. That was a very big surprise for me.
In Cape Verde it means simply the language and the people of these racially mixed islands. I'd say more: the Cape-Verdeans proudly call themselves crioulos as a sign of their culture and nationality. There is even the word crioulidade (creolity) that encompasses all that belongs to the Cape-Verdean heritage and culture.
The islands of Cape Verde, off West Africa, were settled since the XVth century by African slaves and Portuguese colonists. Over the centuries, people from many other origins arrived to the islands, adding blood and colour to the Cape-Verdean mix.
Nowadays (especially since independence in 1975) the Cape-Verdians don't feel racial prejudice: a crioulo may be 'black', 'brown', 'white', 'yellow' or anything in between. Most people are mulatto/mestizo (mix of 'white' Portuguese and 'black' West Africans), but you can find any skin, eyes and hair colors. Some creoles from Fogo Island, for example, are famous for their unexpected mlange of dark skin, blue eyes and blond curled hair.

Fiquei supreendido quando o Lucas (lucasgalodoido) me disse que no Brasil crioulo so as pessoas negras mesmo, e tem um sentido bem pejorativo. Em Cabo Verde a palavra usada para identificar a lngua e o povo destas ilhas de raas misturadas. A maior parte das pessoas so mulatas (mestias), mas todos os cabo-verdianos, de qualquer cor, tm orgulho na sua crioulidade.
