Great Royaldevon 2013-07-22 2:55

Hello MarieLouise,

I'm sure you stood and wondered at these masks and marvelled at the skill of these ancient craftsmen! What fine results from people with primitive tools!
I like how you have given us such a detailed close-up, so that we can appreciate the shapes and the textures. Your bit of shade has stopped the sculpture from being blown out but the b/g tells how bright the sunshine really was.

Have a great day,
Bev :-)

Thanks for your visit Bev !
Indeed, A visit to Turkey and its numerous ancient sites is a continuous marvel.
I was wondering if you could help me ,
I am not sure of the exact English word for the rows of stone seats in an ancient theatre; Do you ? In French, they are called "gradins".
Thanks for sharing.

Default English word

Hello MarieLouise,

You know, I don't think we have a specific word for the individual stone seats.
In a theatre, we would just call them tiers. Tiers of seats means ascending rows. You would have to add the adjective stone to signify they were in an amphitheatre ie) tiers of stone seats.

Sorry, I hope you can make sense of this.

Kind regards,

Thank you ever so much Bev. Your reply has delighted my husband (English) who told me this morning there wasn't a specific word for "gradins". I just wanted to make sure. I am a bit like Doubting St Thomas
