Great Dashab 2009-11-22 7:24

Hi Roland,
I wonder how long before this man is put out of his job by Chinese mass production, as has been the case of too many Czech master glass blowers. Our glass-making industry has been nearly destroyed.
Great daily-life scene, nicely composed. Good light management and very natural colours.
Greetings to Calgary, Dasha

Default To Dashab: mass production

Without being familiar with the real economic details, I have the feeling that the reputation of Venice as a tourist attraction, which is of course not without negative consequences, and the reputation of Murano as a glass making place will keep the local industry going. My impression as a tourist was in fact that any moderately capable artisan glass blower could do well in Murano. The competition is huge, but the influx of tourists seem to be able to fill all shops even in the shoulder season. It also seems to me that the Chinese mass production and the Murano vetrerias target mostly different markets.
It is very unfortunate that the Czech glass industry, which isn't without a solid tradition, either, is going under. It seems to be the course of history and I am sure that the 45 years of competition-fee communist management haven't helped prepare for a highly competitive market.
