Hello Paul, as I think I said before, I am lost for words as I look at these pictures of the gopurams!
Their height is something else!
An excellent point of view with everyday life going on as normal in the foreground.
I wonder if the people become blasι when they are seeing the gopurams every day? Perhaps taking them for granted?
Your pictures from India have been an education!

Difficult to answer your question correctly.
First of all, most people you see around and in the temple are Hindu pilgrims coming from other places in India.
Their visit of the Meenakshi Temple is something very special to them. They don't visit such an important temple every week/month/year.
On the other hand, I think that foreigners look up more to the gopurams than the Indians. Difficult to explain this.
We see very remarkable architecture and art. The visiting Hindus are, as it were, in a holy place where everything has a religious meaning and of course the Indian visitors were very religious Hindus.
