Default A question I will ask on ALL three Trek Sites

I was looking at a new Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPHERICAL HSM LENS for $610.00 USD. In light of my upcoming 3 month trip to Japan, I thought I'd pose a few questions.
I plan to use it on a Canon 30D

1. Do you think it would be a good landscape camera?
2. Do you think the money saved over a similar Canon lens is worth the quality I would sacrafice.
3. Will Vingetting be a major problem?
4. For taking landscape shots such as buildings, fields and people is there such thing as "too" wide angle?
5. Should I consider a zoom lens for my second lens as the only other lens I own is the 18-55 kit lens.
6. Is there any questions I am forgetting to ask? :)

I would LOVE to hear your opinion......

This reviewer is a good spot to start your agonizing choice, as he puts it himself:

You can see the reviews for the canon there too.

I recently purchased the Canon 10-22mm for a trip to Hawaii (I figured there were going to be some big landscapes there!) and am very happy with the purchase. How much money do you figure you will be saving with the Sigma lens? I found the Canon for $689 from Amazon (and while $70 is nothing to sneeze it, I don't think it's that dramatic of a difference, basically 10%). Plus the Canon buys me an extra f-stop (it's f3.5-f4.5) which was nice to have.

I carried both this lens and the Canon 17-85mm IS with me, I got all the range I wanted (never have needed a longer zoom, but I don't take those kinds of photos I guess...)

HTH,

And ofcourse it's 10mm and not 12mm, that's also some different I think!

I'm considering buying a 10-20mm Sigma...but maybe the 12-24 from Sigma is better!?

I'm having a Pentax dSLR..so no option for Canon or Nikons 10-20/22 or whatever..

Yeah, there is a Pentax 12-24..but that one..is expensive! (€660!)
Maybe 2nd hand..

I've also bought the canon 10-22mm for my 350D
I don't have any vigneting issues and it's soooo cool to shoot with.
Image quality is awsome... i'm posting some landscape photos with it, if you want to take a look at my recent posts.

I don't know sigma, but i think it«s a good option... but if money is not an issue, i would go Canon... i went :)))

I also have the 17-85 and 50mm prime
