Default Silver compass golden compass : why not ?

Trekearth is also a geographical site. However some pictures are wrongly classified in TE Database.
I saw Paris classified in the Center of France or Guiza Sphinx in Cairo... etc.
In order to a right classment it would be interesting to rate geographical knowledge by a silver or golden compass.
Any suggestions ?

bonjour didi,
sounds like something we could all benefit from.
i think more details would be appropiate, though - how would it work, how do you 'picture' it?
thanks,
dora

I think just a better interface for adding the location would be a lot better. I only just realised that you could enter in the 'City' name and hit Lookup City to have the 'State' field automatically come up.

Didi,
Rating geographical knowledge per member wouldn't correct the mistakes introduced by these. So the interest of doing this would be limited. Rating members would be no solution.
As Brendan said, improving the way locations are introduced might prove a better way to reduce the number of geographical errors.
Also improving the "Report Problem" regarding locations could help the Admin for doing corrections.
That's just my thoughts.

While it is a pretty nice idea I can come in to what rtome says,
it might be a better idea if you pass through that a location should be corrected. A admin (only Adam????) will do that then..when he has time. I've done lot's of corrections on places in Greece, place where I know a lot from and where I've been. I've passed them on via the report problem screen. It took a long time for them to get fixed..maybe they are still not fixed :( I would like to do it do, I don't like the mess either.

I think it would be a good idea to give some 'admin' functions for certain locations to some person. For instance, I could ' moderate' the Ionian islands..cause I've been on them all (except for Corfu and the small Paxi) and I have maps of them + books. I would let Corfu a bit alone though..but I could also moderate for other Greek pages for instance..and also for Holland, where I come from.

Ofcourse I shouldn't do anything about Russia, Mexico, Afghanistan or Bolivia.

Some 'mods' per country (or a part of that) would be nice, if they could change locations for other people. That would clean some mess. Maybe also those people would deserve a nice compass next to there name :P Then other people can also report problems to these persons.

Motto should be do what you can and where you know something about,
and leave alone the rest..if you don't know something about a a particular location/district/province/county/country.

Please don't trust the data that automatically comes up.
As people have randomly entered all the bigger places to wrong states,
you are likely to get wrong answer anyway.

Kari,

I find the functionality still well worth using.
Think that most often the locations will be in the right state.
And when a location is in the wrong state most times it will be both in the right state and then wrongly duplicated in other states.

And the lookup window gives a photo count for location which generally is a good hint to choose the right state.

For example if you lookup Paris for a photo in France you get:
Paris, Centre (4)
Paris, Ile-de-France (8456)

So Ile-de-France is most likely the right choice...

Frankly I'd encourage the use of this functionality.

If there's several matching locations just consider the photo count...

Wouldn't a faster and better solution simply be to make people aware of it them selves?

Write a comment when you encounter the wrongly filed pictures, i am sure that a lot of people would then correct it. I have tried 1 or 2 times that someone mentioned something like that to me, and i of course fixed it immediately.
Reporting to the administrators would just put a lot of workload on them that could be better used elsewhere.
